A Restored Classic

The intersection of Queen and King is the historic heart of Kitchener (as those street names suggest). The Walper Hotel has overlooked this corner for 130 years, serving as the city’s social and cultural hub. In 2017, we undertook the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and responsibility of a complete restoration and reimagination of the hotel. The respectful renovation infused Abel Walper’s historic establishment with contemporary style.

Continued Legacy

The hotel’s many famous guests and visitors—Eleanor Roosevelt, Al Capone, several Prime Ministers, boxer Lennox Lewis—would recognize the renovation’s grace and refinement if not its new details, which include oak flooring, colorful tiles, in-room murals, bespoke furnishing, and unique artworks by some the region’s most exciting artists. Today, The Walper includes 92 stylish guest rooms, some of the city’s best and most welcoming gathering spaces, and seven high-tech and flexible meeting spaces. Every room has history, but is ready for you to write your own story.

Eat and Drink Like a Local

In addition to The Lokal, a daytime lounge that serves cocktails in the evening, and the sun-drenched Barrister’s Lounge, which features locally-inspired breakfast fare, the Walper Block also includes many best-in-class independent merchants.
